Week 1: The Start-up of You
Week 1
As I watched the videos and read the articles for this week, it got me thinking about the business my husband and I want to create one day down the road. Jared and I have twin 5 1/2 year old daughters. They have some special needs, developmental delays and lack some important emotional and behavioral skills. They are also extremely energetic, enthusiastic and engaging. They love to swim, practice gymnastics, dance and color and paint. We took the girls to their first ballet class when they were about 3 years old. It was a huge failure. They had a really hard time following instructions, waiting their turn and went back and forth between us and the class. It ended early in meltdowns and it also scarred me. No ballet for us!
When we moved here to California we started the girls in gymnastics. They were able to participate in a weekly gymnastics class for about a year and a half but it has been a huge struggle and has induced panic attacks and meltdowns for the girls and for me! Early this year I had a revelation. What if there was a center where the girls could participate in the activities that they love in an environment (and with instructors) that better suited their needs, strengths and weaknesses. I've longed for a safe, accepting environment for myself and for our girls and this Arts Center for kids with special needs was born from that need.
It's just seemed like an idea since I first thought of it in January, but this class has started to make it feel more real. Some of my favorite quotes from the readings have been really inspiring and helpful as I prepare to move forward with my education and with our business plans.

"The combination of spiritual strength and mental capacity provides the means whereby we can act for ourselves rather than be acted upon." (Elder Bednar)
"Dream big. Start with small steps."
"Make no small plans, for they have no power to stir the blood." (Daniel Burnham)
This dream--to open up this business that means so much to us--seems so big, far away, overwhelming and scary. I look forward to learning and discovering the small steps that we'll need to take as we write our life plan.
