Week 3: Honesty and Business Ethics
My most favorite reading from this week was Sister Dew’s
talk entitled, “True Blue, Through and Through.” I think this one important principle and
virtue is at the core of this week’s topic: integrity. Sister Dew talked about how integrity means
you are true to Heavenly Father, true to yourself and true to others. I love this definition because it embodies
not only honesty, but also dependability, accountability, obedience, and
diligence. Unfortunately, this virtue is
on the decline in the personal and professional lives of many in our society. It would be easy for us to take on the slow
stain of the world by justifying or rationalizing some practice or deed that is
accepted as society’s “norm”. It is so
important for us to set ourselves apart from the world by being men and women
of integrity.

I also really enjoyed Elder Robbins talk “Making a Living
and a Life”. I think the world tends to
get so overly concerned about making a living that other weightier matters fall
to the wayside. As Jared and I plan for
our future family and professional lives I want to revisit this talk often to
be reminded that there is nothing more important than seeking after the kingdom
of God first and raising a valiant family.
Heavenly Father has blessed us with unique abilities, talents and
experiences that we can use to lift and serve and bless our families and all
those we interact with. I really
appreciated his quote: “May we all use our God-given talents in the service of
our fellowmen and in making our communities and world better places to live.”

I noticed that next week one of the assignments is about
deconstructing your fears. I think that
will be an important topic and assignment for me as I have so many fears and
concerns about starting a business!
